Who Uses Colocation Hosting?

Recently I’ve been reading a little bit about colocation hosting. This is a type of webserver hosting in which servers are stored in a single data center and those servers meet the hosting needs of hundreds of different customers. What I’m interested in learning about is just who uses colocation hosting.
What I’m learning is that many different types of businesses may use colocation hosting. The most common business to see using this service is the e-commerce business. That makes sense since these are typically web-only businesses that do not have their own physical structures in which to store servers and other equipment. These businesses can utilize the servers at a host provider without having to lease their own space.
Other businesses that use this type of hosting are those businesses that are really large and may be spread out across multiple buildings. Big companies and telecommunications firms are examples of such businesses. Colocation hosting allows them to host everything on one centralized location in spite of their size which may make the business operate more efficiently. This is also a good option for them in case of large disasters because these colocation servers can act as a back-up for the big business.

I was under the impression that all online hosting marts, like those that most small websites use, are all colocation hosting; that’s how they make their money by piecing out a larger hosting location, right? It’s an interesting idea!

I use a colocation service to host my website! I’m not even close to the point where my small site could afford it’s own hosting, and frankly, I wouldn’t want to be. I like things small, simple and easy, and my host provides that by just letting me be a customer. I so don’t have the technical savvy to do more!

I don’t understand any of this stuff. I run a B&B in Venezuela with my husband and son, and my son keeps talking about the importance of having our business online. I like keeping it local and small, but a few extra customers wouldn’t hurt either! I really don’t know the first thing about hosting, but he mentioned colocation hosting.
