Thermal vs. Ink Jet Disk Printers

There are two different types of disk printers available to consumers. One is the thermal printer, and the other is the ink jet printer. While they do both perform the same basic function, CD or DVD printing, they do have their differences. Hopefully this will help you make an informed decision about which one is right for you.

The type that typically fits the average consumer’s needs is the ink jet variety. Just like the ink jet printers that have been in people’s homes for years, these work by spaying the ink through small jets. You have to buy special discs for these CD printers so that the ink will stick. The big advantage to these is that they are fairly inexpensive and you can print at the same photo quality that other ink jet printers do. The big disadvantage is that if the disk gets damp or wet, the picture will most certainly smear.

The other type is thermal. Heat transfers images from a ribbon directly onto the disk, the same way a credit card machine works. The big advantage here is that smudging gets eliminated. They also work very fast, but unfortunately are more expensive than their ink jet counterparts.

So be sure to shop around and compare both types before buying your new disk printer. Hopefully this has helped you make a more educated choice.
