The History of Tattoos and Body Art
Posted by MTS on 05/27/08 in Society
It is hard to tell when tattoos started. It was believed to have started over 5000 years ago, when various early civilizations had colorful tribal tattoos to symbolize status or for treatment of various illnesses (in 1991, scientists found an “ice man” that had over 75 tattoos that they believed was meant to help heal arthritis).
Tattoos have always been meant to be a form of art and beauty, though their purposes sometimes varied depending on the culture. Celtic tattoos, for example, were almost always done to cover the entire body. It was thought that this was meant to be a form of art, but it is possible that the Celts had other reasons for covering the entire body that modern science has not yet discovered.
Regardless, tattoos are likely to continue to be an important part of today’s culture and society. They are still used to decorate the body and be a form of permanent art, and they are a good way to accessorize your body and express yourself in ways you may not feel you were able to previously. The right tattoo can bring out the true soul of a person, and it is interesting to think about what others will think about our tattoos many centuries from now.
