My New Bike

Recently my husband bought me a bike.  Elated, I immediately hopped on and went for a quick ride down our street. I loved the feel of the cool fall air. Upon inquiry I found out my new bike was actually the old bike of our deceased neighbor. A garage sale bargain.  Essentially my new bike was a bike built for senior citizens.  The handle bars are wide and easy to reach, the seat is big and comfy, and the brakes are not attached to the handle bars instead you simply pedal backwards.  My new bike reminded me of my first bike as a kid, only without the banana seat.

I started noticing the senior women who pedal around the neighborhood have similar bikes.  Many of these retired women remain quite active. Some are involved with the neighborhood watch, others volunteer for caregiver training programs, while others create beautiful gardens. Another retiree is an advocate for elder abuse resources.

I admire how active these women remain throughout their retirement.  I marvel at their volunteer efforts from community events to home health care training.  I’m grateful to have my Senior bike, I hope when I’m eligible for retirement I’ll have half the energy of the Senior bikers in my neighborhood.
