I am so thankful that today’s comforters are fire retardant. When I was about seven years old, my mother took sewing classes. She gathered with a group of ladies every Wednesday in an old church recreation room. The floor was cement lined with mismatched donated area rugs. The windows were large, allowing for a flood of natural sunlight. I enjoyed playing with my Barbie and Kelly dolls while my mom learned from an elderly instructor how to make basting or criss-cross stitches on an ancient Singer sewing machine.
One day, all the ladies showed up with patterns. I set my dolls aside to peek at my mother’s pattern and my heart soared when I saw she had selected a design for a twin bed comforter. I was the only one in the house with a twin bed so I knew she was making this for me!
On the weekend, my mother took me to the fabric store and together we selected a Holly Hobby quilted material. I loved it. Holly Hobby had on her traditional blue bonnet with her reddish brown braids poking to the side. On her ever happy smiling face there were dots and dots of freckles, just like the ones I had.
After my beautiful bedding was placed in my room my mother tucked me in bed and turned on my night light. In the middle of the night, my mother woke with a start-probably a jolt from my guardian angel. She went into my room because of a weird smell, and she came to find my blanket starting to melt against my night light. Thankfully it wasn’t close to starting a fire, but could have! These days, comforters and many other bedding materials are made with fire retardant material.

Wow I am glad you are ok. That could have easily started a fire. That is the good thing about bedding today. My daughter has a night light right by her bed so I am glad that he bedding is fire resistant.

I wish I knew how to sew. My mother knows how to and I have asked her to teach me and she never has. I have a daughter now and I would like to know how to sew. Does anyone know any good ideas on how I can learn?

Maggie I would look online and see if there is any craft stored in your area. They sometimes give free lessons on how to sew and do other things. I wish my mom sewed me a comforter when I was little. After the burning incodent did you still use it?

This happend to my daughter. She had a lamp right by her bed and one night her comforter was hitting the lamp and it caught on fire. My family was home so luckily it didnt catch the house on fire, but it was very close.

My son needs to have three night lights in his room at bedtime. I have never thought about his bedding hitting one of the night lights and catching on fire. I am going to move them right now, Thank you for the information.

You should just buy a cover for the night lights and it would be fine. Like she said, now they make bedding that is alot harder to catch on fire. Even if you have three night lights you should be find. I want to learn how to sew as well, any good ideas??
