One of my least favorite things about my job is doing job interviews. Even though I hate firing people more, a job interview is a more grueling affair. You see, even though the person that you are interviewing is nervous, truth be told, you are nervous too as you just don’t know what to expect.
Unfortunately, the turnover at our western gifts store is higher than we would like, and we do more interviews than any other place that I have worked. It isn’t uncommon to do a set of interviews every couple of weeks – that is how bad it is.
Most of the time we go over the standard questions that you would expect with any interview such as previous work history, hobbies, and why they want to work at our store. I also make sure to ask if they have any background in western home decor as we do want them to at least have some interest in what we sell.
I am hoping that we can get things under control before Christmas and maybe then I can have a month or two off from interviews. Hopefully that will be the case, though I won’t hold my breath.

I’ll be the first to admit when I don’t know something and I am not afraid to ask for help. I have found that asking someone who knows the answer can save you a lot of time and headaches. At least that is what has worked for me so far.
So, when my fluorescent light bulbs just didn’t seem to want to come on anymore, I decided to head down to the store to ask a local specialist. Before you jump to conclusions though, I did try some new bulbs in them before going down to the store (and the new ones didn’t work either).
I was greeted by a salesperson who asked kindly what they could do to help. I explained my problem and the gentleman suggested that I might need to replace the Fulham Ballast to get things working properly again. His advice seemed to be sound, so I decided to ask what I needed to do next.
Instead of trying to do it myself (even though it was tempting), I booked an appointment for them to come over next week and fix it for me. I guess in the meantime I will just have to go in the basement during daylight hours, or find my flashlight. Where was it again?

I keep seeing all of these commercials on TV about how I can take all of my ugly, unwanted or unused gold jewelry to these places, and they will give me cash for the gold. You basically sell scrap gold to these people. Then they turn around and melt it down and make new jewelry out of it which they can sell. It is textbook recycling.
So I got to thinking about just how much jewelry I have that never ever gets worn. There was a lot! But my pride was not about to let me waltz into one of these places. What if I ran into one of my neighbors there? What if I ran into an ex? How embarrassing!
And that is when I found that you don’t even need to leave the comfort of your own home to sell your unwanted jewelry. There are online pawn shops that do the same thing as these stores! So I did end up selling a lot of my jewelry that had not been worn in years. Man, some of the stuff I had was so outdated and so ugly. They didn’t care though. They gave me cash, and I gave them gold they could turn into something nice.

A lot of people will tell you that TV makes people dumb. That’s not necessarily true. In fact, the television can be a terrific tool for education. However, you have to watch TV consciously in order to gain an education from it.
Follow these tips to start learning things from TV:
- Watch TV to tune in not to zone out. Many people turn on the tube just to zone out. If you’re not thinking while you watch then you’re not going to learn anything.
- Limit your TV time. Watching TV for too long at one sitting will cause the aforementioned problem of zoning out.
- Watch something educational. You can learn from anything but it’s more likely to happen naturally if the subject is an educational one. History programs, documentaries, science shows and things like that are the best things to watch if you want to learn from TV.
- Follow up with research. You just watched a show that taught you on long term disability insurance which taught you about own occupation disability insurance. What do you do now? If you really want to learn from TV then you’ll go online or to the library to get more disability insurance information.
- Talk intelligently about what you watch. Finally, converse with others about what you watch. This allows you to articulate your thoughts about what you learned. Doing this helps you to solidify the education.
