Dual Diagnosis: Cocaine Addiction and ADHD

Many people who suffer from mental illness unfortunately also have to deal with addictions. There are many theories for this. Some believe that those with a mental illness attempt to self medicate through drugs such as crystal meth or alcohol and subsequently become addicted. No matter what the reason is, the truth is that dual diagnosis is a matter that needs very serious attention. Every year, people either commit suicide or die by drug overdoses because they were not properly treated for their dual-diagnosis. One of the most common of these afflictions is the relation between cocaine addiction and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. This disorder, which primarily surfaces in childhood and the teenage years, causes the person to be distracted and have low concentration.

When the person tries cocaine for the first time, they may notice that their thoughts are not racing as much and they are able to concentrate for much longer periods. This common self-medicating procedure can commonly lead to a dual diagnosis down the line. That is why treating mental illness at its onset is crucial for any progress in the dual diagnosis field for years to come.
