What We Wanted to Be When We Grew Up

When I was a kid, I had very typical answers to the question, "What do you want to be when you grow up?"  I always answered that I wanted to be an astronaut or a paleontologist (I liked space and dinosaurs).

My sister, on the other hand, had an unusual response: She wanted to be a cook.  I remember when she baked her first cake from scratch — she forgot the butter, but other than that it was perfectly amazing — especially considering she was only six years old!  Everyone was sure she would pursue a culinary arts degree when she got older.

She didn’t, of course.  In fact, I think the only culinary training she ended up getting was in Home Economics classes at school.  Kids almost always change their minds about what they want to be when they grow up, discarding their prestigious dream-careers for something a little more practical.  Instead of going to one of the many culinary cooking schools around, my sister attended a traditional university, got a job as a banker, and cooks as a hobby.

Of course, none of us mind much, because that means that she cooks for us for free all the time!
